The Salesians of Don Bosco (Salesian Society)—Founded by St. John Bosco in 1859, is a Catholic religious order of men consisting of religious brothers and priests who live together in community. In collaboration with the Salesian Family and in partnership with the laity, we serve in a variety of educative-pastoral ministries and social services for the benefit of poor youth and their families. We are a registered religious nonprofit in the United States with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
We are the second largest religious community of men in the Catholic Church, with over 50 active Salesian religious brothers and priests (SDBs) serving in the western province of the United States today.
For over 125 years, the Salesian Province in the western United States has been educating and accompanying the young to become honest citizens and good Christians for the 21st century, according to Don Bosco’s Preventive System, a philosophy that, leading with reason, religion, and loving kindness, results in happier, healthier young people. Our province brings this philosophy to life through our administration of:
Care for elderly and infirm Salesian priests and brothers
These 23 affiliate organizations serve over 30,000 people annually, and our province is the umbrella organization that ensures all Salesian works, from schools to parishes, keep the Salesian spirit. We also provide key financial and personnel support, most importantly with SDBs.
It is the Province that provides crucial coordination and oversight of Salesian educational programs and services. The Province ensures the Salesian works to meet the needs of our communities. And it is the Province who steps in to provide financial, personnel, and strategic support when individual affiliates need additional guidance.
Our mission is (a) to educate and provide opportunities for young people especially the poorest and most at-risk to help them become upright-contributing members of society and people of good faith and values; (b) to serve and accompany young people and their families--helping them to recognize God's love for each person.
"Be humble and patient, and the Lord Jesus will give you the will and the means."
- St. John Bosco
Our vision is to become an organization that eradicates youth poverty by sharing and living out the educational philosophy of St. John Bosco, called the Preventive System, with all educators, ministers and those working with young people, especially the poorest and most at-risk.
"All for God and for His Glory. In whatever you do, think of the Glory of God as your main goal."
- St. John Bosco
We believe and strive to live out the Gospel values of loving God and loving neighbor. We believe that every young person is a gift from God and called by God to bring all that is good to this world. The Salesians educate with the heart and journey with the young through an educational method of reason, religion, and loving-kindness (Preventive System)—believing that they can grow and develop to become happy and healthy contributing members of society. The Salesians of Don Bosco commit to rigorous study, work, and the giving of our entire lives to accompany young people and their families to have a better future for themselves and for their communities.
