As we near the sacred month of November, our hearts and prayers are drawn to the memory of our beloved relatives and friends who have gone before us. All Saints’ Day, followed by All Souls’ Day, reminds us that death does not end our bonds with loved ones but transforms them. 1 Corinthians 12:26 says, “If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all members share its joys.” St. Paul reminded us of the theological foundation of the Communion of Saints. The Church exists as one communion of members as a single organism; our prayerful concern for fellow members extends to those undergoing purification, just as it does to our brothers and sisters on earth.
This November, our Salesian family mourns the loss and celebrates the lives of our Salesian priests and brothers who entered eternal life: Bro. Jerry Weirich and Bro. Patrick A. Barbariol. Each of them ministered with deep love and commitment to the young and poor across our Province.
I would like to remember Bro. Patrick Barbariol, who worked in the print shop at Bishop Mora Salesian High School for 25 years, sharing his knowledge and skills, particularly in the field of printing. His technical expertise was not simply a profession; it became a way to educate and form young people. For more than forty years, he was part of the Don Bosco Technical Institute. Countless young people were enamored by his simplicity, humor, and practical assistance. He was more than a simple teacher. He was a mentor and supporter who raised money so some could go to college and later connected them with industry leaders to secure fulfilling careers. His presence was a gift to many students, faculty, staff, and Salesians privileged to know him.
Traditionally in November, we honor those who have gone before us, especially our departed Salesian brothers, benefactors, and your loved ones. We will place their names on the altar in our provincial residence chapel in San Francisco, where they will be included in our daily Masses throughout the month. We remember the past with gratitude and continue our mission with hope; your prayers and support help us carry on the legacy of these men and all who give so generously to the mission of St. John Bosco.
Honor your loved ones with a gift that transforms lives! By donating in their memory, you pay tribute to those who have gone before us and help carry forward their legacy through the Salesian mission. Your support directly impacts the lives of young people in need, bringing hope, faith, and opportunity where it is needed most. Let their memory live on through the joy and promise of the next generation.
May our provident and loving God bless your family with peace, health, and comfort in these days. Please know I pray for you and those you hold dear.
Sincerely in the Lord’s love, Very Rev. Joe Thịnh Đức Nguyễn, SDB Provincial
